The opening session From Training Ground to Play Ground: Taking Adultism Out of  Childhood will be presented by Nanci Luna Jiménez, founder and President of Luna Jiménez Seminars & Associates (LJS). Adultism is the training ground for all other oppressions.  Imagine a childhood free from adultism?  How can we assist the young people we are called to serve to heal their own wounds and reclaim their true power? Through storytelling and games, Nanci will take us on a journey back to our first experiences with adultism. We will learn tools to improve our communication and renew us in our work with young people.  With new insights, we will deepen our vision of childhoods free from the disempowerment, humiliation, neglect and violence that left too many of us feeling powerless to effect change and discouraged in the face of obstacles.  This highly interactive session will have you laughing and crying as we explore the effects of power-both having and not having-in our childhood.

Building on her opening session presentation, Nanci Luna Jiménez, founder and President of Luna Jiménez Seminars & Associates (LJS), will present You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know:  A Path to Authentic Cross-Cultural Practice.  Despite well-meaning intentions, our own biases limit the effectiveness of our work serving young people.  Early experiences of institutional oppression left its residue on each of us. This program focuses on where blindspots hinder our capacity to build relationships with people from any group, work closely and authentically with colleagues from backgrounds different from our own, and be truly inclusive in serving youth from all communities.  In this interactive workshop we will learn a framework for social change and emotional healing as well as tools to create trust and deepen understanding.

In this session you will be invited to:

  • Share and explore the dynamics of institutional and internalized oppression
  • Understand the patterns we act out as individuals and members of groups in response to oppression
  • Practice skills that assist us to separate our true selves from the misinformation of racism, heterosexism, sexism, classism, etc. installed on us through the mistreatment of adultism.
